Explanation of the Buddha Eye Dot and its meaning

Every Buddhist monasteries and Stupas in Nepal has a giant pair of eyes with a Bindu on a forehead and a unique nose like figure staring form the four side, so one question arises “Why?”.

Why a pair of eyes on all four direction? Why a Bindu? Why a unique symbol that resembles like a Question mark?

Buddha is well known throughout the world as the Light of Asia, he symbolises peace, wisdom, conscience and harmony. Born in a royal family as a prince in Lumbini, Nepal, at an age of 29 he left luxury world to look out the truth and meaning of life. After may years of deep meditation, he attained enlightenment. Soon after that he began to pass on his knowledge to many of his followers. These teachings later became the basic principles of a religion, Buddhism, which has become one of the largest religions in the world.

In Buddhist, the eyes are the representation of Lord Buddha's omnipotent powers of seeing all that can be in the past, present as well as in futures. Eyes of Buddha also symbolise important part of Enlightenment. After attaining Nirvana in Bodh Gaya, Lord Buddha sees all the sentient beings in all realms i.e. human realm, god realm, hell realm, etc.

Moreover, Lord Buddha teachings revolves around his knowledge, insight and wisdom after he entered Nirvana. As a fact, Eyes of Buddha also symbolises the eyes of Wisdom. These eyes of Wisdom represent the omnipotent powers of all seeing and looking out in all four directions as well as in various flow of times.

Between the Buddha's eyes where the nose would be is a curly symbol that looks like question mark. This is the Nepali character for the number 1, which symbolises unity of all the things as well as the one way to reach enlightenment—through the Buddha's teachings. Bindu above Buddha eye is the third eye (Tri-netra), symbolising the all-seeing wisdom of the Buddha.

In Buddhism, it is believed that every being can attain eyes of Wisdom and can see beyond material world. Even though people feel despair in this muddled world, often distracted and deceived by greed, ignorance, hatred, and lead to the darkness of the life. Only light of wisdom can lead these people out of darkness. And Lord Buddha eyes of Wisdom bring the light in the dark times and lead the people to the path to enlightenment.
