ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ
"Om Mani Padme Hum" is a six syllabled Sanskrit mantra, and it is associated with the four-armed Shadakshari (Chengresi) form of
Avalokiteshvara. He is a bodhisattva of compassion. The word Shadaksara means the Six Syllabled. The mantra is a combination of Six word and these six syllabled represents the “
Paramahrdaya” or innermost heart of Avalokiteshvara. The first description of the mantra "
Om Mani Padme Hum" was found in late 4
th- 5
th Century BCE, in Karandavyuha Sutra. According to this, it is said the
Shakyamuni Buddha has said “This mantra is the most beneficial and even he received the teaching from
Amitabha Buddha”.
The mantra is quite easy to recite and do the chanting, yet it is one of the most powerful mantra as it contains essence of entire teaching.
ॐ Ōṃ (ओम्)
It represents the Generosity and chanting this mantra purifies the Pride and Ego. It is also the symbol of wisdom and is represented by White Color. The "Om" syllable is highly regarded in Hinduism, and it is a powerful mantra itself. It is found in almost all the mantra and often referred as “Beej- Mantra” which means it is seed for all else. "Om" is also believed to be primordial sound of all creation. It contains three letters “A”, “U”, and “M” which symbolizes the body, speech and mind. "Om" lives within the realm of Gods in the samsaric realm.
म Ma
It represents the Ethics and chanting this mantra purifies the Jealousy and lust of entertainment. It is also the symbol of Compassion and is represented by Green Color. The syllable "Ma" dissolves jealousy and in the samsaric realm, "Ma" lives within the realm of Jealous gods and when this syllable mantra is chanted repeatedly it helps to remove our jealous attachments and nurtures ethical behavior.
णि Ni
It represents the Patience and chanting this mantra purifies the Passion and desire. It is also the symbol of Body, speech, mind quality and activity and is represented by Yellow Color. And in the samsaric realm, "Ni" lives within the realm of Human Beings and when this syllable mantra is chanted repeatedly it is believed to dissolve our passion and desire and building our ability to be patient with ourselves and others.
पद् Pad
It represents the Diligence and chanting this mantra purifies the Ignorance and prejudice. It is also the symbol of Equanimity and is represented by Blue Color. In the samsaric realm, "Pad" lives within the realm of animals and when this syllable mantra is chanted repeatedly it helps to dissolve our ignorance and many prejudice as well as judgmental notions and cultivates the quality of perseverance.
मे Me
It represents the Renunciation and chanting this mantra purifies the Greed and possessiveness. It is also the symbol of Bliss and is represented by Red Color. In the samsaric realm, "Me" lives within the realm of Hungry Ghosts and when this syllable mantra is chanted repeatedly it helps to remove possessiveness characteristics and improves our concentration power. The syllable "Pad" and "Me" when combines means Lotus and represents the wisdom.
हूँ Hum
It represents the Wisdom and chanting this mantra purifies the Aggression and hatred. It is also the symbol of Compassion and is represented by Black Color. In the samsaric realm, "Hum" lies within the realm of Hell. "Hum" is said to be an undisturbed power which cannot be disturbed by anything. Simply its unmovable and unshakeable. When we chant this syllable mantra, it helps to dissolve the hatred and aggression while cultivating our own innate wisdom.
So, when a person recites this mantra, it helps to achieve the perfection in six practices starting from generosity to wisdom. Hanging the prayer flags with this mantra helps to bring luck and practice compassion in ones life.

Almost 90% of the Singing Bowl you find in the market have Om Mani Padme Hum Mantra in it.
