Palden Lhamo, also known as Sri Devi, is a prominent Tibetan guardian deity and one of the eight protector deities. Chvaskamuni devi is how Newars refer to her. She is the most heinous and powerful of all the demons, as well as the most feared. Her appearance is horrible, with her disproportionately huge head, cruel, uncaring eyes, and third eye in the center of her forehead.
In this thangka, Palden Lhamo is a bulky, muscular woman who rides a white-faced mule while wearing a saddle made from her own son's skin, which she flayed herself. Venomous snakes' coil as a harness around her white mule's head. Two dice are dangling from the mule's front flank, which she uses to assess whether someone's karmic punishment is favorable or terrible. She wears human skins and feeds on human brains with her bloodied teeth and writhing tongue. Her gray hair is standing straight up. A crown of five human skulls and a garland of coiled snakes adorns her head.
