This Thangka features Samantabhadra is a Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva connected with discipline and meditation. In Buddhism, he forms the Shakyamuni triad with Gautama Buddha and his companion bodhisattva Majur. He is the Lotus Sutra's sponsor and, according to the Avatamsaka Sutra, made the 10 big vows that form the foundation of a bodhisattva. Samantabhadra is known as Pxián in Chinese Buddhism and is linked with action, whereas Majur is related with praj (transcendent wisdom). In Japan, this bodhisattva is known as Fugen, and is revered in Tendai and Shingon Buddhism, as well as by Nichiren Buddhism as the protector of the Lotus Sutra. Samantabhadra is also the name of the Adi-Buddha - in indivisible Yab-Yum with his consort, Samantabhadr - in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.
