Marpa is one of the founders of Kagyu Lineage along with Tilopa, Naropa, Milerepa, Gampopa and Dusum Khyenpa (Also Known as Karmapa). During his life (1012-1099) he attainted many teaching and had many disciples including Milarepa. Tilopa has prophesied the birth of Marpa which will take place hundred miles far from India in Tibet. Because of this Prophecy and previous Karmic connection with Naropa, Naropa was the principal teacher of Marpa.
Marpa received many important teachings from Naropa but the most important teaching is Mahamudra and the Six Dharmas of Naropa. In his life time, Marpa made total of three visits to India all the way from Tibet and on each visit, he mastered a new teaching or Tantra.
On the first journey to India, when Marpa reached Nepal (an intersection point of Ancient time between India And Tibet) he met Paindapa who then told Naropa was the greatest teacher in India. Then Marpa searched for Naropa and received the teaching of Hevajra Tantra.
After this on the way back to Tibet he met Nyo Lotsawa, who further inspired him to study Guhyasamaja Tantra form master called Jnanagrbha. Once he was master on two important tantra - Hevajra Tantra and Guhyasamaja Tantra, Nyo Lotsawa further recommended him to learn Mahamaya Tantra. So, for the third time he returned back to India and with Great master Naropa he received Mahamaya Tantra as well.
And finally on the end of his third journey, Naropa appointed Marpa as his regent and now he was to train and teach the Naropa Teaching in Tibet.
