Tara, a meditation deity of ancient origin, is known as the female Bodhisattva of liberation. According to her teachings, her practice is meant to cultivate inner qualities and expand understanding of compassion and emptiness. The 21 emanations of Tara are said to demonstrate her unparalleled compassion - greater than that of a mother for her children - thus making her the Goddess of Compassion.

Green Tara is said to have originated from the sorrowful tear of Avalokiteshvara, which fell from the sky when he beheld the suffering of the world. According to legend, his tear created two Taras: a white, peaceful one, and a fierce green one. Green Tara is often depicted as a young girl of 16, characterized by a mischievous and playful nature. Her right leg is extended, signaling that she is ready to aid the suffering, while her left leg is folded in a contemplative pose on top of a lotus pedestal, representing wisdom and art. Her left hand clutches a blue lotus, a symbol of power and purity, while her right hand is making a gesture of granting boons.
