Every colour you see is sand. Not paint, not pigment on cloth — real coloured sand, laid grain by grain by a single artisan in Nepal over the course of a year, then fixed with great precision onto wood so that it may endure.
A sand mandala is traditionally swept away the day it is completed, a teaching on impermanence. This one was made to remain, so that all who come before it may receive its blessing.

Himalayas Shop brought an exhibition of thangka paintings from Nepal to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion. Among those we met was Mr Ian Green, and through him we came to understand the Stupa's wish.
The Stupa had long wished to enshrine a mandala upon its altar, and a beautiful altar was then being crafted to receive one — standing in quiet anticipation of what would one day rest upon it.
Hearing of this, Narayan Shrestha asked whether the Stupa would accept a sand mandala offered from Nepal. It was made as an offering, without condition — for the Dharma, and for all who would one day stand before it.
In March 2026, Mr Ian Green and his wife Judy travelled to Nepal, where the completed mandala — a work of a full year's devotion — was shown to them, and the Stupa was humbly asked to accept it as an offering. It was received with warmth, and the offering was accepted.
In May 2026, Prateek Shrestha travelled to Nepal and met the artisan who had given a year of his life to this work. He acquired the completed mandala and arranged for it to be sent to Australia, where it was offered to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion and now rests upon its altar.
Trained in the classical Tibetan tradition and carrying forward a lineage of sacred artistic practice preserved for centuries in the monasteries of Tibet and Nepal, he worked on this mandala for close to a year.
Sand does not forgive haste. Each of the 722 deities and every concentric palace had to be placed and fixed with exact precision. What is held here is not only extraordinary technical mastery but a living transmission of Dharma — each gesture of the hand an offering, each grain of sand a prayer.
The Kalachakra Mandala — meaning “Wheel of Time” in Sanskrit — is among the most complex and revered sacred diagrams in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition.
It represents the entire cosmos as the sacred palace of the deity Kalachakra, embodying the union of wisdom and compassion, time and timelessness.
Comprising 722 deities arranged across five concentric palaces, each layer corresponds to the outer universe, the inner human body, and the enlightened dimension of reality.
It is both a map of the cosmos and a guide to liberation.
The Kalachakra teachings were first introduced in Tibet during the 11th century.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has bestowed the Kalachakra initiation many times across the world, inviting all beings to witness and receive its blessings.

At the most superficial level, we could simply say that Kalachakra is the nature of everything. Or put another way, everything which exists is of the nature of cycles of time. There is nothing which exists outside this constant nexus of changing cycles. If we look outward to the universe with its many galaxies and solar systems, we can see endless cycles of change playing out over the past, present and future.
It is in this way, that every thing is contained within the Outer Kalachakra.
Moving from macro to micro, we can then consider the nature of the beings which inhabit this universe. At the level of an individual person, Kalachakra can be understood to be the very subtle structures of a person’s body and mind. This is known as the Inner Kalachakra. It includes not only the structure, but also the dynamic influence that the mind/body complex has on the surrounding universe.
Therefore, through understanding this Inner Kalachakra we are able to break free from the dominance of our external conditions and transform our experience in order to create a harmonious and peaceful environment.
At the deepest level, the Kalachakra Mandala represents the Enlightened Reality — the awakened state beyond ordinary time, confusion, and separation.
Here, the cycles of time are no longer seen as something that controls us, but as part of a greater path toward wisdom and liberation. The mandala reminds us that the outer universe and the inner mind are deeply connected, and through spiritual practice, both can be transformed into compassion, clarity, and awakened awareness.
This is the ultimate meaning of the Kalachakra: the transformation of body, speech, and mind into enlightened wisdom for the benefit of all beings.
