A Prayer Wheel is traditionally a sacred Buddhist item with a cylindrical wheel mounted on a spindle, inscribed with mantras and prayers. Turning the prayer wheel is said to have the same spiritual benefits as reciting the mantras or prayers aloud.
The mantra inscribed on a prayer wheel is "Om Mani Padme Hum." This powerful mantra is related to Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion in Tibetan Buddhism. It is highly revered among Buddhist traditions as it is thought to be able to cleanse negative karma and grant enlightenment.
Spinning the prayer wheel is a type of meditation, said to accumulate spiritual merit. It is thought that each rotation releases mantras into the atmosphere, benefiting not only the spinner, but also those nearby. Used primarily in Tibetan Buddhism, prayer wheels symbolize reverence and hold great spiritual worth. Other Buddhist sects also use them.
